I love connecting with diverse groups of people and engaging in meaningful conversations. I write and speak my own thoughts and ideas as well as other people’s that are worth sharing and learning from. While subjects I am passionate about vary from era to era, these days (post-2020) I cannot shut up about closing the equity gap, detoxifying the workplace, influencing social justice and promoting happy living.

Business Communications

Bad navigation in business communication can be fatal. If you don’t believe me, visit an aviation school some time and ask them how clear and structured communication can save lives and how the other way round can be deadly. I often use the phrase “death by PowerPoint”, but there is a lot of truth in how inefficient and ineffective communications cost us billions in man hours and energy even if we all work remotely. Now imagine the carbon footprint of having your executive flying across the globe on a private plane to deliver a pitch or leading a conference only to see photographic evidence that someone is nodding off in the boardroom.

Organisational Culture

I have heard the term organisational culture since I was at university, but leading up to the pandemic people were already talking about how employees were resigning not to leave the company but to leave their boss. Then because of the pandemic, companies around the world, no matter what size, had to pivot, transform and at least change the way they work. This plus social media camaraderie uncovered the nasty truth about a lack of leadership among many senior managers. These economic challenges, burnouts, and priority shifts led to what has been called “The Great Resignation”. What is unsurprising is that companies are now forced to delve into the high level of mental toxicity in their organisational cultures. I have two decades of first-hand experience on both sides: as the employee and the employer.

SDG

Even though the world has gone woke, sustainable development goals (SDG) remain out of reach. Major philanthropic organisations, UN agencies and NGOs are all equipped with Bible-thick guidelines and proposals. Yet laws are still not made to protect people, policies are still not made to support people, and the change we would like to see is happening slower than the glaciers are melting. I would love to hear concrete, incremental reform that can be replicated and practised simultaneously around the world so that the compounding effect can be enjoyed in the short term. Why short term? Because when you see results right away, it will fuel you to further the work. Just like exercise.

DEI Commitments

The lens I use on DEI is intercultural communications. My first encounter with intercultural relationships was as the child of parents that married outside their respective tribes, growing up as a Christian in a Muslim country and educated in Catholic private schools amongst the affluent families of Chinese descent. I married a Caucasian without ever having lived in the West. Now my husband and I are raising our mixed-raced children in a coastal English city with neighbours who come from at least 10 different countries. So when I talk about the nuances of navigating through intercultural communications, I kid you not: I have nearly 40 years of lived experience!

Design

I cannot hand draw to save my life, but boy do I have a keen eye for design. I designed my own wedding dresses, company logo and the interior of my office. And when I think about design, I know that look and feel are not enough. I considered the user experience (how I can go to the bathroom in a big puffy white dress) long before I learned the term UX. More recently, though, I attended training that showed me eye-opening prompts to help us reframe the way we see problems so we can design agile solutions. Also, I volunteer in Design Justice Network to further promote inclusivity and accessibility in designs.

This is the 1-hour version of my half-day training session. The style of delivery will be suitable for a large (>30 people). The way you get the most out of my seminars is to ask as many questions as possible during the second half of the hour.

The ideal classroom is from 5 to 12 people who will get to do assignments and receive priceless feedback in the session. The session runs ideally from 9am to 12pm with a 10-minute coffee break. This is a fully immersive learning experience.
